I Like To Ride My Bicycle

Today was a LOOONG day!  Grandpa said he wanted to “kick my ass” on a 30+ mile bike ride today, and so I allowed him to try to do so 😉  Breakfast started with the usual:

A couple of dates with AB and a banana with AB.  Coffee to get things moving.

My grandfather bikes almost 7 days a week with his active older living community bike club. Now, keep in mind, these are not your average beach cruiser riders.  My grandfather and the rest of the bike group are all in their 70s or older and they ride on average 20-30 miles a day…on road bikes…at 17-20 mph.  This is no joke!  We rode on a gorgeous and very hilly ride out into Lincoln, CA amongst, cow, deer, turkeys and llamas.  We stopped halfway through (about 17 miles) and got drinks and breakfast at a roadside coffee shop.

This is the moment when I realized how tired I was!  Ugh, another 17 miles to go!  This is also the point when I wish I realized eating a snack was prudent.

After 35.06 miles (!!!!) I was starved!  I got home and the first thing I did was fry up 2 eggs, 3 pieces of black forest ham (in buttah), sprinkle on fresh oregano and rosemary from the garden, and top with avocado and tomatoes.

Some grapes on the side!  I thought this would fill me up for at least 3-4 hrs, but nope…those miles kept burning!  I was starved again in 2.5 hrs at the most!  Unfortunately, I allowed myself to get too hungry before planning my next snack, so this is what happened…

Whoops!  Me and my almond butter 🙂 We are inseparable!  Plus…it was vacation!  Next up, Hubby got to pick what he wanted to do.  His choice??  Hitting balls at the driving range!  I’m pretty awful, but have been making strides in my consistency and form.  I just need to hit balls a bit more often!

I actually did have a lot of fun and had a few really good hits.  Action shot!!

If you look VERY closely, you can kind of see some of my new arm muscles 😉 Thank you, CrossFit!  Next up was Mom’s choice…Bocce Ball anyone?

Action shot!  My mom kicked our butts!  Hubby’s technique was aggressively smashing all the balls in the lane…a bit unscrupulous, but effective nevertheless!

Afterwards, we went home and rested before dinner.  I, of course, was famished again…another snack on order!

Some mixed nuts and grapes.  I ate about 3/4 of the nuts and called it quits.  My mom was working on a gorgeous and delicious salad for dinner!

Lots of fruit, candied nuts and toasted coconut over mixed greens.  Hubby loved it!

Dinner was poached salmon, salad and brown rice.  I opted out of the brown rice to save a point and had wine instead. I should have opted out of everything!  Hubby tried to trick us by saying he bought a $27 bottle of Chardonnay.  Just looking at the bottle I could tell he was lying.  I took a sip and said, “Is this like a $2 bottle of Chardonnay??”  I was close:  $2.49.  And I could tell!  My mom loved it.  The cheaper the better for her.  I decided that I will only cheat for bottles of wine that cost $15 or more…not worth a point!  At dinner, we also had a conversation about whether farm raised or wild caught salmon were a better decision (think big picture:  cost, sustainability, nutritional benefits, etc.)

What do you think is the better choice on salmon (SALMON ONLY)?  Wild caught or farm raised?  I have my own opinions, but after our discussion, I want to do more research!  Thoughts??

    woooo good job on that big ride! i feel after long days of cardio i suck at snack planning to and always dig right into a jar of nut butter lol that salad looks aaaaaamazing! i have HEARD wild caught is better, but i really dont no much i just no i read alot of that!

      Thank ya 🙂 It was fun but tough! My legs were toast for a few days! I think that wild caught salmon is supposed to be better, but I’m not sure why…I always thought sustainable was the way to go!

    WOW! The salad looks amazing —YUM!! Alyssa — you are always up for a challenge —-bet your G’pa was PROUD!! Nice memory —super nice. Luv ya, G&G Thanks for sharing all this —really loved it .
