But That’s Not The Way Mama Makes It!

January 27, 2011

Watch out Mamas! I’m cutting corners and reinventing recipes 🙂  Some good (I feature these) and some not so good (I destroy these and hide them far far away :-)).

Hubby is notorious for loving his mother’s recipes (Mama M, they are darn good recipes!); however, I am not allowed to make his mother’s recipes because I change too many of the ingredients.

No matter how many times Hubby tries to make his mother’s classics, he just can’t do it the way mama can.  For example, Party Meatballs are one of Hubby’s favorite appetizers.  These are made by buying meatballs, adding one jar of grape jelly, and one jar of Heinz 57 Chili Sauce in a crockpot and turning on the heat.  That’s it!

Well, seeing as we didn’t have either of these ingredients (chili sauce/grape jelly), I suggested that we use the items we did have: Cholula Sauce and Mango Apricot Peach Jam.  Hubby was appalled! How could I talk such blasphemy?!

We made his meatballs just like the recipe called for and what did he say? “These don’t taste like they should.  They’re too watery…”

Oh, Hubby…

To prove that my dish would have been delish, I decided to make it for dinner.  I took 1/2 cup of the jelly and about 1/2 cup of the Cholula sauce, combined that with turkey meatballs and sugar snap peas and sauteed until warm and reduced. Served with mixed greens salad and a Seeds of Change Quinoa Blend.

Hubby’s words: “These meatballs are amazing! How did you make them?!”

Me: MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA 🙂

Do you ever surprise your spouse/friend/special someone with something they thought they wouldn’t like and then love?
