Day 9: Sleep is Key

August 29, 2010

Sometimes I feel like I am invincible. No sleep, no food…psh! I don’t need it! That stuff’s for weaklings! PSYCH! I went to bed last night at 11:30PM and thought I would be fine and dandy today…no way Jose! Not to mention , CO is having some crazy pollen issues and I have decided that this is the year for me to develop allergies…nice, Alyssa. I woke up in a terribly agitated state with an ear itch that was driving me insane! Hubby was sweet enough to get me some Sudafed which both knocked me out and got rid of the itch…it was so itchy it was painful.

I got up today at 4:40AM to go to Body Pump. I really love Body Pump class…it is challenging and a good workout. Check out the stats from this morning’s session:

Before my workout I had a mug of Yerba Mate and some cream of rice with Yams and Whey protein and blueberries. So good! I wasn’t that hungry so I only ate half…I promptly finished the rest after class.

I got to work and was starving again! More cream of rice with a tbsp of my homemade almond butter…that was the last of it 😦 I also have pepita seed butter from Naturally Nutty and some of Costco’s Organic Peanut Butter, so I really don’t need to make any more right now…but I can dream of it until my next batch!!!

Speaking of peanut butter and nut butters in general, I just bought a Groupon today for OPB&J!! It is a local restaurant in Colorado Springs that makes crazy versions of Peanut Butter and Jelly…I’ve been wanting to go, especially since they carry GF bread! I’ll let you know what I thought 🙂

Before my second workout of the day, I had 2 HBE and some egg whites…they are pink because I cooked them in the leftover pan from sauteeing my beets 🙂 kind of fun!

I went to the gym and ran 5 miles during my lunch…trying to juggle marathon training and weight training is HARD! I think I will have to focus on my running for now and weight train when I have time. After the race, I’ll up the weights and decrease the running.

After the run, I was starving! Here are the stats from the run, I imediately replensihed those with my post workout snack of oats, berries, and yams and whey protein powder 🙂

Speaking of oats, I think I may have made a discovery. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this, but I’ve had a chronic headache for about 3 weeks. I thought it was dehydration, then a tension headache, then stress, then sleeping funny…I’ve finally settled on the fact that it might be gluten. I’ve been trying McCann‘s Irish Oats because I heard they were not contaminated but not marked GF. I’ve also had a headache for the duration I’ve been eating them. Coincidence? I felt great today until my post-workout snack, which happened to be oats. Prior to that I was eating cream of rice which is GF. I think I’ve found the culprit. After I weed it out completely, I’ll let you know if my symptoms have subsided. Hubby was a dear and found that Calcium helps to get rid of headaches (if you are into the natural remedy). Look what he found in the cupboard!!

They’re even GF!

I actually had been hiding these because I was eating them like candy 🙂 Calcium is good for you, right!?!

Dinner was 3.5 oz of top round steak, small sweet potato, and 1 cup of roasted veggies tossed in Bragg‘s and ground pepper.  I sprayed the veggies with PAM to keep them from sticking…turned out wonderfully!

Hey, Grandma and Grandaddy, can you tell which cup I’m using?? 🙂

Last thing…look what came in the mail!

I had no idea that Artisana made so many varieties!

Do you believe in homeopathy? What remedies do you swear by? Ever tried Artisana?

Wow…congrats on the early rising! I’m lucky if I can roll out of bed and squeeze a shower in before work 🙂 I wish I could pull off two workouts a day, but even one gets hard sometimes. You rock!!

Thanks, Nicole! It really is all about just doing it. I never thought that I would be able to get up before 5AM a few years ago! Now, I want it, so I do it 🙂

I agree, I don’t function very well if I’m lacking sleep and my workouts are mediocre when I’m sleep deprived.

I love Artisana’s coconut butter. I just ran out today, bummed!

Hey Lea! Yea, sleep is crucial to moods, appetites, energy, and most importantly feeling strong during workouts. That is what I think effects me most 🙂 Good to have it pinned down!

Artisana coconut butter is awesome! I’m selling it in my OpenSky store now 🙂

That inner ear itch kills me, and it’s such a deep itch that it’s almost impossible to scratch. I wear ear plugs to sleep and sometimes find myself sorta wiggling the ear plug in my sleep to scratch the itch. (Sorry if that was gross. >.>) I’m sorry your allergies are acting up! And I hope you find yourself with time to rest soon. I’m worthless without sleep, so I sympathize.

If I’m ever in Colorado, we are *so* going to OPB&J. That is fact. 😀 GF AND peanut butter? I want.

That’s awful that the oats were glutening you! I’m sorry to hear that, but I’m glad you were able to track down the symptoms and match them to the oats. I don’t mean to pry, so if this is personal, don’t answer: but did you ever get the results back from your gluten levels test? I don’t recall you mentioning it, but I do hope you get it all sorted out!

Kaz, I would love to have you visit! And without a doubt I will take you to OPB&J 🙂 I plan on going this week, so I will give you the rundown 😉 I would also take you to the Gluten Free Crepe place here…soooo good!

I have a stomach of steel and really am not phased/grossed out by much 🙂 No worries on the ear itching technique!

No feedback from the gluten tests yet, but I will be getting them and posting them this week!

    hi alyssa,
i saw your site and was wondering since you do have celiac disease you are pretty familiar with symptoms and such…anyways. i have not gotten tested for celiac disease, but i have a lot digestion issues in terms of not moiving bowels regularly and always feeling bloated. I eat a lot of fiber and drink a lot of water, but it doesnt seem to help. Lately i have tried going a few days with out eating wheat products to see if it made a difference. i Havent tried it for a long period time though just a few days, but then the day that i do eat something with wheat i have noticed that I get a really bad stomach ache and the next day will feel really bloated. what do you think? does that sound anything like what you have?

Dani, Celiac disease can present itself in many different ways. For me it is extreme gas and constipation, for my sisters it is extreme stomach pain and diarrhea. The bloating is definitely something that might be indicative, but there is also a possibility that you are just gluten intolerant. How is your bloodwork? Do you have low iron or are you malnourished at all? If you had Celiac, you would be deprived of one or more nutrients…that is the big player there! It is just best to get tested if you are able to 🙂
